In Lapland winter starts in September or October, this is when the first snow comes. In southern Finland, where most of the population live, winter really starts in November. The nights begin to get longer and longer, the first snow comes, and it’s difficult to find the energy to get up in the dark mornings. This time of year is perhaps the most difficult for car drivers. There is often thick fog in the morning, the temperature is often below zero and the roads are icy. Finnish drivers use special tyres in winter - these tyres have metal studs. Visibility is often very poor in November and December, and there are many road accidents during these winter months. In winter everybody needs to wear warm clothes. If you go outside you need gloves or mittens and also a warm hat because the icy winds can sometimes blow very hard. Thick socks and long johns are also good to use at this time of year. Although only 5 million people live in Finland, Finland has won many medals in the Winter Olympic Games. The Finnish winter offers many possibilities for winter sports. You can do cross-country skiing everywhere, and in many places there are electric lights over the ski tracks and you can ski in the evening after work. Downhill skiing has also become very popular and many towns have good downhill skiing centres. In Lapland the skiing season is very long and there are many first-class downhill skiing centres with good hotels. Ice hockey is also a popular winter sport and in 1995 Finland won the world championship for the first time. 10.D Writing exercise - Write a similar text about "Summer in Finland".
