4.8 Exercise - Listening Comprehension (reading text)

The Managing Director of a British company is telling a group

of visitors about the company.

Good Afternoon ladies and gentlemen. I’m delighted to see you here today.
First, I’d like to tell you all a little about our our company,
British Sports Shoes Ltd.

British Sports Shoes, or BSS as we call it, is a very old company.
It was established over 60 years ago, in 1933. In those days the
company made football boots, and shoes and boots for the British Army.
Today we still make football boots, but we don’t make shoes for the army.

Our main products today are football boots, golf shoes and ski boots.
These are all produced here at our London factory.

Altogether we employ 600 people. The number of office staff is 100,
and 500 people work in production in the factory. This is 100 more
than last year because our new ski boots sold very well last year.

We had an excellent turnover last year, again thanks to the new
ski-boot range. Our turnover last year was £25 million. We were
all very pleased with this.

Exports were very good indeed last year. We opened a new sales
office in Paris to handle European exports and they were very successful.
We export mainly to France and Germany. Our football boots are very
popular in Germany and our ski-boots sold very well in France.

Our company has one subsidiary, it’s in Taiwan. The Taiwan subsidiary
makes the plastic parts for the ski-boots.

Has anybody got any questions?
