4.14 Exercise - Listening Comprehension

Listen to Pekka talking about his holiday in London,

then answer the questions

We left Helsinki at 10 past 4 on Friday afternoon in a British Airways plane.
The flight was quite full because a lot of people were travelling to London
for their holidays. We arrived there at about 5 pm in the afternoon and we
went by underground to our hotel in central London.

It was a very warm afternoon and it was heavy work to carry the suitcases.
That evening we went for a long walk in Hyde Park and then had a Chinese
meal in Soho. We spent 3 days in London and visited all the important sights.

On Saturday morning we visited Madame Tussauds, the famous waxworks museum.
There was a terribly long queue of people waiting to get in so we had to
wait about 40 minutes before we could go in. Fortunately it wasn’t so hot
that day. The waxworks were fantastic, very realistic. In fact my friend
went up to a policeman to ask for directions, only to find that the policeman
was also a waxwork.

In the afternoon we went shopping. We went to Harrods in Knightsbridge.
It’s a wonderful department store - you can buy anything you want, but it’s
quite expensive. They told us that members of the British Royal family often
shop there. We stayed in Harrods for about 3 hours looking at all the
departments.

In the evening we went to see a musical in the West End. The name of the
musical was Cats and it was very funny. The next morning we went to see the
Crown Jewels in the Tower of London. Again we had to wait in a long queue
before we could go in. The jewels were really marvellous, but we couldn’t
stop and look at them, because the guards, or beefeaters as they call them,
told us to keep moving.

In the afternoon we went on a boat trip down the River Thames. We all enjoyed
it very much. It was a very sunny day but it was cool on the river. That evening
we went to a pop concert in Wembley Stadium. We saw the Rolling Stones. There
were thousands of people there but the show was excellent - the music was a
little too loud at times.

On Monday morning we went to Oxford Street where all the famous department
stores are. We went to Selfridges and Debenhams., Marks and Spencers and
Littlewoods. We spent all our money on clothes because the clothes in
England are much cheaper than in Finland. We went to the airport in the
afternoon and returned to Helsinki. We arrived at Helsinki airport at 7 pm.
