9.12 Food, food, food

It can sometimes be quite difficult to describe different types of Finnish food and drink to foreigners. The main reason being that some items of food, particulary berries, mushrooms and fish, are not eaten in other countries. In many cases there is an English word, but most Englishman will probably not know it. The next time you meet an Englishman, ask if they know what a cowberry* is, or if they’ve ever seen a hedgehog mushroom*, or if they would like to try turban fungus* sauce, or even if they’d like to eat fried vendace*!

* cowberry = puolukka , hedgehog mushroom = vaalea orakas, turban fungus = korvasieni, vendace = muikku
