INSTRUCTIONS

Congratulations on starting the Level 3 English course.

This course is intended for people who have studied English for about 2 years
and are at the Lower Intermediate level. People who have studied more, but
haven’t used their English for a long period will also benefit from this course.

The course consists of several units. Each unit contains grammar points,
dialogues, reading texts and exercises. In the first four units the basic
verb tenses are revised.

How to use the course.

The reading texts, dialogues and exercises in each unit are numbered
sequentially. You should start at the beginning and work your way through
the course. Most of the exercises are self-correcting - in other words you
should write your answer in the space provided and check your answer with
the correct answer by clicking "vastaus".

Some of the exercises are listening comprehension exercises. To do these
exercises, you can order the cassettes from the address below or those
who don’t have the cassette you can read the tapescript by clicking the
appropriate button and doing the exercise as a reading comprehension exercise.

Each unit also contains pronunciation practice exercises. These are on the
cassette and are "listen and repeat" type. If you don’t have the cassette you
can simply read the sentences aloud.

Each unit is also designed to extend your vocabulary. If you come accross a
new word, and it is highlighted, by clicking the word you go to the vocabulary
page where you will also find a pronunciation guide (for Finnish speakers).
If a word is new for you, but not highlighted, you should look it up in
a dictionary.

It is recommended that you use a notebook with the course. Here you should
write down new structures and phrases and use this as a revision book. Your
notebook should also have a special section for vocabulary.

You can choose your own speed to work through the course, but one popular
timetable is this:

7 hrs per week

Day 1 - 50 minutes working with the computer, then 10 minutes revision from your notebook.
Day 2 - 5 minutes notebook revision, 45 minutes computer, 10 minutes notebook revision
Day 3 - 5 minutes notebook revision, 45 minutes computer, 10 minutes notebook revision
Day 4 - 60 minutes computer revision (re-reading texts and grammar points, redoing exercises)
Day 5 - 5 minutes notebook revision, 45 minutes computer, 10 minutes notebook revision
Day 6 - 5 minutes notebook revision, 45 minutes computer, 10 minutes notebook revision
Day 7 - 60 minutes computer revision

At the end of each unit is a selection of revision exercises for you to do and
send by e-mail to your instructor who will correct them and return them to you.

You can also contact your instructor by e-mail any time you have a question or
problem with the course.

Each unit requires approximately 12 hours of study.
Finally, if you find any mistakes in the course, or links which don’t work,
please e-mail us immediately.

Have fun
