6.9 KEY FUNCTION - BUYING A TRAIN / PLANE / BUS TICKET

Dialogue A: Buying a train ticket

Clerk: Good morning.

Customer: Good morning. Day return to London, please.

Clerk: Here you are. That’s £12.50 please.

Customer: What time is the next train to London?

Clerk: The next one’s a stopper. It leaves at 10.15 and it arrives at 12.30.

Customer: What about the next fast train? When does it leave?

Clerk: There’s an express at 10.45. It only stops at Reading and it arrives at 11.45.

Customer: That sounds like the train for me. By the way, what time does the last train leave London for Oxford?

Clerk: The last one leaves London at 22.30 and gets in at 23.30. But if you miss that you can always take the first morning train. That leaves at 03.15 and gets here at 05.00. But if you take that train, you can’t use your day return. You’ll need a period return.

Customer: I see, but I’m sure I’ll come back tonight. Thank you.

Clerk: You’re welcome.

Dialogue B: Enquiring about coaches.

Customer: Good afternoon. I want to go to Glasgow tomorrow, what time do the coaches depart?

Clerk: There’s a direct service departing at 7.00 in the morning, it gets in to Glasgow at 8 pm.

Customer: 7 o’clock is a bit early for me. Is there a later departure?

Clerk: Yes, you could take the 9.00 and change at Manchester.

Customer: When does it get in to Glasgow?

Clerk: It arrives at 21.30.

Customer: That sounds fine. I’d like a single to Glasgow. Do I need a seat reservation?

Clerk: No, there are always plenty of seats available.

Dialogue C: Enquiring about flights

Customer: Good morning, I need to fly to Paris tomorrow, I must be there before 11 am.

Clerk: Let’s see. BA 720 leaves at 10 and gets in at 10.35. Oh, but that flight’s full.

Customer: I don’t mind an earlier flight.

Clerk: Well, BA 715 leaves at 9.00 and gets in at 9.35, and there are plenty of seats available.

Customer: What time are the return flights?

Clerk: They’re every hour, on the hour.

Customer: Could you book me on the 8 pm if there are seats?

Clerk: Certainly. Yes, there are seats, so that’s London-Paris leaving 9.00 and

returning Paris - London 8 pm. Is that business class or economy?

Customer: Economy, please.

Clerk: That’ll be £98, please. How would you like to pay?

Customer: By bank card...
